Today we need to recap everything we have learned so far on our journey. In a relatively short time we have managed to discover a lot of truth, and we also dispelled some dubious doctrines. If you are anything like me you probably forget most of it by now so this should be a good time to put everything in a nutshell.
We have learned that we were created a triune being. Spirit in flesh and that flesh has a soul. God blew of His Spirit in man and man was seen as alive. When man sinned he died a spiritual death as per God’s warning, and we all died in that sin. Men were now seen as dead even though they walked the earth. Jesus confirmed this by calling men dead. After the crucifixion of Christ whoever believed in Christ received a quickening or a new spirit and was seen as alive or as a living soul once again.
We at that point discovered that the doctrine that says once saved always saved is in fact wrong. It is wrong because the name of a believer can be blotted out of the book of life if he does not overcome. Actually we saw that a person can die spiritually again and would not be able to be led to repentance again because he cannot crucify Christ again. That person has committed the unpardonable sin of not obeying the Spirit of God and is seen as twice dead. Obedience to the Spirit means to be led by the Spirit of God and therefore we are sons of God. Only when we are led by the Spirit are we sons of God. That means we obey and transform to become like Christ.
Then we clearly saw in scripture the difference between our two natures. The one being our old fleshly nature, and the other the new spiritual nature. This new spiritual nature is the one we have to conform to and be renewed too. Unfortunately we still have the old man or nature in us and to make it even more difficult, these two natures are the opposite of each other and the one cannot discern the other. We saw that if we continue in the old fleshly nature we are contrary to God who wants us to serve Him in spirit and truth because He is Spirit.
A very important doctrine we realized is also the difference between Jesus in us and us in Jesus. When we believe Jesus comes and stays in us. When we do or obey His Spirit in us, we are in Him. Jesus explained this as when we drink His blood we believe, and when we eat His flesh we are in Him or we partake of Him. Always two things. First we believe and then we do because we believe.
When we believed we received of His Spirit and received spirit salvation. Then our souls conform to, or obey that new spirit nature to get soul salvation. There again the two parts of salvation and faith are shown very clearly. Just as faith without works is dead, so a man’s new life or spirit will die if there is no obedience to the Spirit. And that person will be twice dead.
I know it seems like a lot but in actual fact it is very easy and simple. Once you understand that we have to believe and do, everything else will make a lot more sense as we continue in our adventure in finding God. Understanding just this basic simple part of the difference between spirit and soul and flesh is the key to unlock many mysteries in the word of God and not only that but also the key to exposing a lot of false doctrines.
