God blew of His Spirit into the nostrils of Adam and Adam was considered a living soul. We have now seen that it is confirmed elsewhere in the word, new and Old Testament, that it is the Spirit that gives life. But there is more to it, in fact if man has of the Spirit of God he himself is considered alive. That is very important because of the warning that God issues man. God says:
Gen 2
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
This is interesting because the Lord says in the day that you eat of it you will surely die!! We all know the story of how the serpent deceived Eve and said:
Gen 3
4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.
Eve eats of the tree and gives to Adam as well. Only thing is they don’t die in the day they ate it. What gives? Did God lie? No:
Numbers 23
19 ” God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?
Hebrews 6
18 that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
God does not lie, in fact He says they will surely die, yet they continued on for hundreds of years. Something did die though. It was not there flesh(basar) but the spirit(ruach) which the Lord blew in their nostrils. So they went from being considered a living soul to a not living soul. They were seen as dead. They did die in the day they ate of the tree, they died a spiritual death and walk the earth as flesh with a soul and dead spirit. How do we know and how can we confirm this as doctrine? See most of the people after this death never even realized they were spiritually dead. They could just not fathom it.
When Jesus started teaching He did something curious, He said that the Jews were dead.
Matt 8
22 But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
Luke 9
60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”
Jesus knew they had dead spirits and they needed to be reborn again in spirit or made alive, they needed God to breathe into their nostrils again the breath of life or the Spirit of God. This is how Jesus said it to one of the Jews top teachers, a man called Nicodemus:
John 3
5 “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
It was terribly confusing for Nicodemus and he just could not understand that he as all men needed a new spirit. After Jesus was crucified He appeared in the upper room to His disciples and He gave them a new spirit again, He made them alive again!
John 20
22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
So just like in the case of Adam Jesus blew of God’s Spirit in their nostrils and from that time they were considered living souls again.
This is how Paul says it:
Ephesians 2
1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,
2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,
3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)
Colossians 2
13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses.
Next time we will continue with spirit, till then.
God bless.
